Digital Learning and Student Engagement in Higher Education: Examining the Role of Interactive Learning Environments

The rapid expansion of digital learning environments has transformed the way higher education institutions design, deliver, and evaluate teaching and learning activities. Beyond providing access to course materials, contemporary digital platforms increasingly incorporate interactive features such as discussion forums, online quizzes, collaborative assignments, multimedia resources, and immediate feedback mechanisms. The present study examines the relationship between the use of interactive digital learning environments and student engagement among undergraduate learners. A descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire focusing on students' participation, interaction, motivation, and perceived learning experience. The study considers four dimensions of digital engagement: frequency of platform use, participation in interactive activities, communication with instructors, and collaborative learning. The findings indicate that students who reported more frequent participation in interactive digital activities also demonstrated higher levels of perceived academic engagement. Students particularly valued immediate feedback, access to recorded learning materials, and opportunities for peer interaction. However, the findings also suggest that technology alone does not guarantee meaningful engagement. Course organization, instructor involvement, accessibility of learning resources, and clarity of academic expectations remain important factors influencing students' experiences. The study concludes that higher education institutions can strengthen student engagement by integrating interactive digital practices with appropriately designed pedagogical strategies.
